School Board fires superintendent

The Duval County School Board has scheduled a special Tuesday meeting to discuss Superintendent Joseph Wise's contract, which extends through Oct. 31, 2009. Four of seven votes are needed to terminate his employment. Wise has been superintendent since November 2005.

Delaware readers keeping up

Delaware media are keeping their eye on what's going on here with Dr. Wise.

Wise was formerly the Christina School District superintendent before coming to Jacksonville in 2005. The Christina School District, which is located in Wilmington, is Delaware's largest.

Are you reading this from Delaware? What are teachers, parents, students or anyone else saying about what's going on up here?

We're saying, "We warned you."
We feel so badly for you - you all were hoodwinked, but so far, you're getting off easy. At least to this point, you are not millions of dollars in debt as we were left. Some posters have suggested that you have an audit before he leaves - I think that would be the smart thing to do. His M.O. is pretty astounding. Many are conjecturing that he has provoked this firing situation so he may be released from his contract to pursue his next victims. We are all hoping it doesn't involve the possibility of violating the public trust. If he moves out of the public eye and into the private sector, I wonder what will happen with his entourage.
How sad to live one's life in this manner. I bear him no ill will because of his personal life - it's his ethics that are so troublesome.

Why didn't the Duval County School Board properly check Wise out. The allegations about his and his cronies incompetence with the Christinia District here in Delaware were well known before he escaped to FLA.

I just hope that the school board have enough justification in firing him or the county will have to pay him $600,000 to terminate his contract. I just want to know who hired him in the first place???

Those of us affected by Wise in Delaware are rejoicing at his termination. But he is never held accountable for his destruction. He's free to move on to another state, another school district, with a nice big check in his bank account. Yes, Duval, audit the finances before you cut a check!!

Its ashame that Wise has messed up Duval also! We are facing higher property taxes in Christina from this joker, hopefully he will never get another job in a school district again!

One the one hand, we're laughing because Duval totally ignored the problem with Christina when it surfaced. No one in FL had the decency to ask him a single question about what happened in DE. For the most part, the people of Duval looked at us as if WE were crazy. I continuosly watched the Jax papers to see if anyone would ask him to be acountable for the hundreds in DE that were losing their jobs...but it never happened. On the other hand, I'll give the Duval board credit for doing what our board didn't have the guts/intelligence to do.
Now it's your turn to watch him at his next district, shuffling principals and destroying the community feel of each school, and my favorite, praising himself for "increasing the number of students enrolled in AP courses". You now are aware, like us, that all he did was change honors courses to "AP", forcing more kids to take AP courses. He'll never mention their success rate on the AP exams, just that they're "enrolled". Anyway, I think all of the teachers who lost their jobs because of him to send him a sympathy card.

Oh yeah, watch all of his cronies, David Sundstrom, Scott Flowers, Ken Williams, start looking for new jobs. They're all so useless that they cannot possibly stay at a job without his backing. I would hate to be one of his croanies who continuosly has to follow him from mess to mess.

You couldn't hear us whoohooing up here in Delaware? You couldn't feel the breeze from the HappyDance?

Although we feel badly for the students and their families who were forced to take AP classes against their will so that Wise could receive a bonus, it is wonderful that he has finally been found out and I cannot feel sorry for him losing his job. The man is a bully with students, employees, and anyone else doing business with him. If you don't agree with him, then watch out! (By the way, it was obvious to us that all he did was use the stroke of a pen to change the name of the honors classes to AP classes, resulting in making himself look good. On paper anyway.)

One word to all of you in Duval County: AUDIT.

Here in Delaware we are still facing layoffs, tax increases, and many other things to make up for Wise spending money that did not exist. He brought in his own team to Delaware, and overlooked people who were perfectly qualified to do the job to make room for his cronies and had them hired at huge salaries with no money to back it up. Does that sound familiar to you? They, in turn, ran our finances into the ground by implementing programs that cost a fortune and did little good, if any good at all. Did he talk you in to buying E-School too? There was a waste of money!

The $28 million deficit left to us by Wise and his crew has naturally resulted in many budget cuts and the ripple effect is still going on. For instance, grounds maintenance has been cut, resulting in teams and bands not being allowed to use the field except on game day. I know of one high school band who practices at night in the parking lot--in the dark. But there they are, trying to make the best of it! Teachers are teaching without much help, and intervention programs have been cut back because of layoffs. Last year we literally were begging for donations of paper, pens, pencils, crayons, the basics, so that the classrooms would be furnished with supplies for the students. And the district was the recipient of the pennies collected in the mall fountain to use to buy supplies. Yes, that is how bad it it really is here!!

Again: audit, audit, audit!! And do it now! And then don't let it go by saying whoops, he did it again, but find a way to make Wise AND his accomplices pay so that you will recover from his administration. Make sure that you include all of them, too numerous to mention, but make sure that you do include Sundstrom, Flowers, Williams, and Giles to name a just a few.

Now let us know how to recover from severe destruction of our morale.

Oh yes, Delaware IS listening.

I moved out of the Christina School District because of Wise. Besides not being a good super, he was very dishonest. He would falsify documentation to the state and feds for additional money. Once you start finding money missing and shortfalls, he will hide behind the phrase, "he was doing it for the kids." Don't fall for his lies. The Christina School District is still feeling the problems that Wise left behind.

The truth is finally out! As far as Joey Wise is concerned, he NEVER cared about the students. He's a power-loving charlatan who surrounds himself with puppets to do his will and viciously attacks those who are strong and secure enough to challenge his ideas and methods. For Joey, the education of students is just a game of checkers that he wants to win. It's not about the children, it's about Joey's ego. Good riddance to bad rubbish!! Great job Duval County.

Christina is getting ready to go to the voters for a much needed tax increase. I just hope that the debacle surrounding Joey in Duval does not reopen the wounds he inflicted here and impact the vote. If so, he will have screwed us again!

Wise is bright and may have orchestrated this whole thing to move on the something else with a fat settlement in his wallet. Just before he left Delaware, he hoodwinked the Board into renegotiating his contract early and giving him a raise.
