School Board fires superintendent

The Duval County School Board has scheduled a special Tuesday meeting to discuss Superintendent Joseph Wise's contract, which extends through Oct. 31, 2009. Four of seven votes are needed to terminate his employment. Wise has been superintendent since November 2005.

Meeting About To Start

As usual, the School Board meeting is running a bit late.

However, the room is already nearly full.

I just saw Superintendent Joseph Wise laugh with board member Nancy Broner.

Just in case you're wondering about the set up, Chairwoman Vicki Drake sits front and center, and Wise sits next to her. Also sitting on the dais at the end is Wise's chief of staff and best friend David Sundstrom.

Wise's executive staff sits at the very front of the audience, including several people he hired and a couple from his old district in Delaware.

The room is eerily silent now. Vicki Drake, the board's chairwoman, just took her seat so we're ready to begin ...

By the way, Skot Wilson, a local parent and overall thorn in the board's side, just dropped off a copy of a petition gathered by his son with the names of about 40 classmates calling for the resignation of Wise.

Typical small town mentality… I do not agree with all that Wise has done but you know I know the Priestly Jackson has been unethical on many occasions… Just ask around… However, you know if you work for the school system you better not… She will come after you… We all know she doesn’t live in her district… But let’s just sweep that under the carpet… like normal… the division widens for all… have we thought about where the kids are in all of this… school hasn’t stopped… how about what good things happened today in a local school… Tell me about a child who learned to read or a student who the bulb just went on for in algebra… How about some good news…
